Collecting an Offering
We collect an offering each week in our children's church ministry. The purpose of this is two-fold:
1) To begin to teach the children the scriptural principle of tithing and giving;
2) To give to the ministry of a worthy missionary or mission program
Of course, you may elect to put your children's church offerings in the church's general fund or donate it toward the bus ministry or something. We have just found that our kids are really intrigued by missionaries, and it excites them to give to this cause.
When we reach $50, we allow the children's church kids to choose a missionary to give the funds to. If there is an upcoming missions project, we set a goal for getting the $50 by then. So far we have never failed to reach a deadline.
Earlier in the year we had our church-wide annual Missions Conference. A missionary couple to Uganda (with 5 kids -- Amen! and Oh, me!) helped in our children's church on the opening day of the conference, and the kids elected to donate the offering to them. They were very happy and thankful. And I don't think it was any coincidence that we "happened" to hit $50 that day!
Our next goal was to send a donation to a national pastor in India who was holding a massive evangelistic conference. Our church had pledged to send them $5000 (which we exceeded), and the CCBC children's church ministry had our part in that blessing!
Recently we once again hit $50; and after being offered three choices, the children voted to give the money toward our own pastor's upcoming missions trip to India and the Philippines.
We've begun the collections again, and it looks like we will wrap it up right about the time of our next Missions Conference...
The Mechanics...
We have two plate-like baskets that we collect the money in. We select a well-behaved boy and girl to "usher" for their team. We then turn the money into the church office in an provided envelope. We used to keep up with it ourselves in a jar until we got to $50, but my husband wisely suggested that we turn it in for accountability purposes. It is always best to route all money through the church office.
We occasionally have campaigns and contests that include a push for bringing offerings. These types of contests are always boys vs. girls.
